KUCHING: With the absence of state-level Gawai open house on June 1, this state capital had been unusually quiet on the first day of the Gawai Dayak celebration.
It has been several years now since the state’s Dayak leaders pooled their resources to hold the open house normally attended by the Head of State Tun Abang Muhammad Salahuddin Abang Barieng, Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, state and federal ministers, foreign and local dignitaries and members of the public from all walks of life.
The majority of the state’s Dayak leaders left the city to celebrate the harvest festival in their respective hometowns or constituencies in rural areas.
Only a handful, such as Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk James Dawos Mamit, are celebrating in the city.
Last year, Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Alfred Jabu and Social Development and Urbanisation Minister Datuk Seri William Mawan held open houses in their respective homes in the city on the first and second day of Gawai.
