Miss Earth Sabah 2011: Beauties nurturing nature

KOTA KINABALU: Returning for its second consecutive year running, the Miss Earth Sabah 2011 pageant yesterday held a press conference here to officially announce the commencement of its scored activities leading up to the finale later this month.

Organising chairperson Mandy Nandu shared the pageant’s continued attempt to raise the bar for educating young women in effective and practical ways to help raise awareness for the environment.

The national title for the pageant has been swept up for two consecutive years by State representatives, first in 2009 by Mandy herself and then again by Appey Rowenna in 2010.

The two went on to compete at Miss Earth’s international level, flying to the Philippines’ Boracay Islands and Nha Trang in Vietnam respectively to represent the country on a global scale.

Miss Earth Sabah is a competition that places great emphasis on the performance and behaviour of its participants at activities and events that occur long before the pageant itself.

The finalists are closely observed and evaluated on their performance and enthusiasm in several programmes that focus on environmental preservation, such as a recent beach cleaning at Sulug Island conducted with Novotel1Borneo Kota Kinabalu and 1Borneo Hypermall.

Other activities include an educational tour of Shangri-la's Rasa Ria Resort’s green facilities followed by a tree-planting, as well as an agriculture-related session at Kota Marudu’s Waynetech.

Mandy has been a strong advocate for promoting environmental awareness, intentionally exposing the finalists of the Miss Earth Sabah pageant in ways that can help to cultivate values on green living.

In a brief speech, Mandy shared, “With our theme ‘Beauties Nurturing Nature’, this (Miss Earth Sabah) serves the purpose as I have no doubt that with all the priceless experience, valuable knowledge and confidence gained from this prestigious green journey, all these finalists would be able to represent the voice of our Mother Earth. A bold and honest voice is indeed louder than the crowd.”
